民訴記(99) - 開竅

Happy New Year! I remember a conversion a long time ago with a friend. He had not worked long after college graduation. In fact it was when he first started to seriously look for jobs. He had lots of worries that he might not be able to keep a job even if offered one. I told him that no matter how demanding a job was, he could master anything if he did it every day. After a while, he might even find the work trivial. Think about that. You’re not retarded or disabled. If thousands upon thousands of people could do that, is there any reason why you could not? He landed a job soon afterward. We talked about that again about a year later. He told me it was true that one could learn anything that is done daily. I asked him why so many young men among our friends and around his age were still wasting away. He said the enlightenment came to him out of the blue and then he realized he had to be responsible for his life. Probably the others had not been enlightened yet. That’s probably why clear instructions and sound advice could never get through to them. Have you been enlightened yet? Only you can allow yourself to be enlightened and the world will not stop and wait for your enlightenment. I believe enlightenments come in a flash and one can be enlightened many times over one’s life. In fact, I hope that I will be enlightened a few more times, get smarter and stop being a loser. It’s like those glass soda bottles. Open the cap and you might find a prize. I hope the prize is not another free drink for I don’t want to live my life again. One shouldn’t be pessimistic at the beginning of a new year. Have you ever been offered a dream job but worried that you might not be qualified? Then you’d need to remind yourself that you can learn and do anything if you work on it every day. Of course this will never happen. Dream job just come knocking on your door? Dream on! Hey, what if it came true? It might be the only big break in your life and you ought to consider it seriously. If you gave it up because you didn’t think you were good enough, someone even worse might take that job. For example, let’s assume you were offered an opportunity to be the chief administrator of Hong Kong. You turned down the offer and Mr. Tung took it. Well, what happened then? Everyone said they would make better administrators than Mr. Tung. But you didn’t take the job! I picked Mr. Tung as an example because of his low popularity. However, I think he’s a good leader for Hong Kong, especially in the way that he subdued the overheated real estate market. His policies actually did drive housing prices down, which was the only way to increase home ownership. Some of my friends were underwater home owners then and they didn’t complain. They were making the same mortgage payments. As they lived in their own properties, price fluctuations had no impact on their quality of life. Mr. Tung’s bad reputation was stirred by false accusations of the mass media. So it might not be that easy to take on Mr. Tung’s job. However, you may qualify to be CEO of many large corporations, e.g. PCCW. Its CEO actually flunked out of college. I know a few college dropouts like Bill Gates and Steve Jobs built successful businesses. However, if they chose to finish school, I believe they could make it easily. Dropping out of college is very different from flunking out of college. This guy could be CEO after flunking out of school. I believe you can do the same or better if offered the opportunity. Back in New York, Jon Corzine had been the CEO of Goldman Sachs, a senator and the governor of New Jersey. He became the CEO of MF Global in the March of 2010 and managed to bankrupt the firm in about a year and a half. He did it by recklessly loading up the firm with Sovereign Euro debts when the prices kept going down. Before he could sell those papers for a profit, MF Global was already broke. Who would surmise that this successful businessman had just one trick? He made his fortune and became head of Goldman by the same trick. He recklessly bought distressed assets and waited for them to bounce back. It worked in the bullish market back then but not in the current economic turmoil. One would think he’d know better. Successful people are not all smart. When the broad environment works to the advantage of your shortcomings, you could succeed too. Too bad MF Global and New Jersey found out only after they were ruined by Corzine. MF Global could have been better off having you as CEO. Even if you didn’t have management experience, I trust that it’d take you longer to bankrupt the firm. If you’re offered an important task, you should consider that if you turned down the offer, a fool might take it. The fool might ruin everything or might actually come out ahead. Opportunities and results are not within your control but sometimes you can choose whether to pursue the opportunity. I’m Kwokman. Hope you and I will be enlightened soon!
